The Onyx pop-top

£7,995.00

From £7,995. A pop-top that mounts onto the roof rack instead of replacing it, so the roof keeps working. Tell us your van and we will check it fits, price it with or without fitting, and book you a workshop day. Delivery from early November 2026.

Description

The Onyx pop-top is both an extra bed and a roof rack, which is what makes it worth the roof it sits on. You can carry boards and boxes with the pop-top fitted, and you get two extra berths as well. A Maxxair fan can go into the pop-top itself, so the van ventilates even with the pop-top closed, and the hard shell takes solar on top, keeping your battery topped up. On a long-wheelbase van it still leaves room for roof-mounted air conditioning, and there is still room to mount an awning down the side. Most pop-tops take over your roof; this one leaves it available.

It is the same unit we fit to the Arête, the Outpost and the Mesa, designed in house. Raised, it opens a two-berth space above the van with mesh windows on three sides, so the upper berth stays cool and you can see out of it lying down. Closed, it sits low and flat.

Sizes. The pop-top and its roof rack together add 21cm to the height of the van when closed. The upper berth is 190 × 122cm (the size of a double bed). The unit covers 260 × 131cm of roof, and weighs 105kg on a medium wheelbase or 110kg on a long wheelbase, roof rack included. That leaves 63cm of roof rack free in front of the pop-top on either wheelbase, where most medium-wheelbase pop-tops leave none at all, and a further 90cm behind it on a long wheelbase (10cm on a medium).

What’s included in the price: the pop-top, an insulation layer, the mattress, the roof rack, the light bar, two cross bars that support the pop-top, the flange and hatch cut into the roof with its trim, the fastening mechanism, a telescopic ladder, and all fixings and fittings. It is built to one specification, in one finish, for the MAN TGE and the VW Crafter.

How it works. Tell us your van and what you want, and we will check it fits before anything is paid — that conversation takes a few minutes and it saves both of us a wasted order. The pop-top is £7,995 on a medium wheelbase or £8,195 on a long one, supplied for you or your builder to fit. Add fitting at our workshop for £950 and it is £8,945 or £9,145.

Once we have agreed your specification and a date, a £500 booking fee reserves your pop-top and your day in the workshop. It comes off the total, and the balance is due before your pop-top leaves us.

Fitting. We recommend adding fitting at the Onyx workshop. The hatch is a cut into your roof, the seal around it is what keeps the weather out, and it wants doing once and doing right. Fitting takes a day. If you or your builder are fitting it, you can collect from us or we will arrange delivery and quote it separately.

Access. The roof rack fixes into the factory roof holes and the main hatch is cut into the roof itself, so we need clear access both inside and out. If your van is already lined or boarded, or has anything mounted to the roof, tell us before you buy and we will check what would be involved. If you are thinking about a pop-top but are not ready to commit, we can fit the roof rack now and retrofit the pop-top to it later.

There is more you can add to it. A front storage box across the roof rack, roof bars on top of the pop-top, bamboo storage boxes with reading lights inside it, a Maxxair fan, and a 350W solar panel on the hard shell. Mention them when we confirm your build and we will price them with the rest.

Tell us your wheelbase when you get in touch. If you are not certain which you have, say so and we will work it out with you. Delivery is from early November 2026. Warranty is one year, fair wear and tear.

Please note: as this is fitted to your van, it cannot be returned for a change of mind once fitted. You are fully covered if anything is faulty or the fitting is not right. See our refunds and returns policy.

Please note: we do not run cables into the van. We mount the unit and terminate it at the roof, and the final connection to your electrical system is made by you or your builder.
